A Leader of Men

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A Leader of Men is a miniature wargame capturing Company-level combat in WW2. It uses a new and unique system to remove a high degree of control from players, but allows them to play the role of Leaders trying to direct and control the battle situation. Players will get intensely involved in the game as the battles developed and are shaped by the Leaders the player represents.

The game uses a unique concept as the 'engine' of the game. This 'engine' is based around doctrinal training and proven decision making techniques. These concepts are now used as standard in NATO training. More detail about the history and development of these ideas can be found in the Design Notes.

Because the engine takes care of all the complexity for you, you are left to play a game leading the men. Each platoon is rated in several ways, reflecting their relative morale, training & cohesion, and leadership. Over an entire unit you can have a tapestry of relative ability represented, as you might in reality.

You as the Commander, must harness the strengths of each platoon, supporting them as needed, and when needed, moving yourself into position to motivate or direct, or even lead them.

Planning and having a order to your plans are encouraged, and represented in uncomplicated format so that this does not slow the game. This is a strength of the rules, and when combined with the engine allows solo play.

Unlike most games that use a I-GO-U-GO turn structure, A Leader of Men has a very unpredictable feel, yet it does not feel like something truly random as other card based systems. This gives the player a better feel of reality as the game plays out reflecting the relative leadership qualities of the troops represented.

The game uses a wide variety of dice types to play, d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. The use of these dice with mechanisms that use consistent resolution methods and fixed targets makes for faster and less brain taxing play. Play will become intuitive after the first few turns as all mechanisms use the same resolution method. No hunting through books for details on variations. No debates over interpratation of words. Simplicity.

But do not be fooled by all the simplicity. If you actually try number crunching the numbers in how the game works you may get a headache. Thankfully the game soaks up the complexity that it represents, real men in combat, and leaves you to lead your men across the table.

For more details on all these things, see the Design Notes and sample pages attached below.

Also, check the Battle Reports section of the boards to see how the game plays.

Have not played a match yet but the focus on moral and the leadership of the units is interesting. Also his interest in recreating the chaos of real life (combat or otherwise) has pedagogical elements to it which may be useful in building ones characte [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
