Axe Age

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Axe Age has been worked on for several years now. Extensivly playtested, the system holds up well to both skirmish level and large scale battle level. The system uses d10s, and was designed with 25mm-28mm scale models in mind. In addition to extensive folklore research, we had a very good official/unofficial historical consultant with a lot of knowledge and practical ideas on warfare back in the day, and we actually listened to him. For this reason, the combat system is fairly realistic and plays well.

The game takes place in a dark age fantasy setting. Law and order have broken down and you, the player, are a small time warlord trying to carve out a kingdom for yourself. Multiple tribes, weapons, armors, and much more are the tools of your trade. The various tribes that make up your warband are all drawn from history and folklore, with special abilities and available gear that reflect this. Your warband can be made up of units from diferant tribes, or from only one, it's all up to you.

does page 91 exist or is that a misprint on the page numbering?

Hi,
I purchased this game system several years ago but can use it because it lacks a real point system.
There are costs for equipment but nothing for basic raw cost of models. For instance, what is the cost of the Lowlander (page 18) and what would be the cost if a single stat is increased by1, 2 etc.
Without a proper point system, even an approximative one, a game system, as good the mechanics can be, is almost unuseful (my point of view, of course), so how does that works?

There are points costs for models. What do you mean? Is it not showing up on your PDF?

The Lowlanders on pg 75, in the section for tribes, are 15 Influence.

Hi,
Thanks for the answer, but what is the influence of a model if i change some stats values, for example, if i want a lowlander with CR +1, morale +1 and RAFD/ CODF 6, what should be the "influence" cost? +1 for each increase or decrease? or +2 or +1 for some and +2 for another?. I tried to find out from existing models and some equipement costs, but can't get the right formula.

This is an amazing game with lots of creative potential. I overlooked this game several times because it looked like another historical dark ages game. It is actually a dark ages fantasy games. The protagonist's names have been changed but if you read between the lines you will recognize the Vikings, the romans, Welsh, Saxon, Irish and so on. Alongside this are many varieties of trolls, monsters from the woods, dog monsters, zombies, skeletons and some other creepy things that I cannot categorize.
I believe most of the mythical creatures are based on actual ancient British, Irish, Pictish and other ancient culture's legends.
That being said the potential for your warband is limitless. Depending on what you choose your warband could have 5 models or 30 models. I like the idea of a small raiding party of snow trolls. The author portrays the outlanders as Greek hoplites coming to raid and pillage. They could just as easily be vikings. Or make a warband based on farmers and their varying...See more

Thank you very much for the review! I suppose I will be working on a unit builder, as that is a good suggestion and I already have the formulas I used for points values. I am also currently working on an expansion, looking into the lands where the Outlanders came from.

Hello. I've done an update that should fix a few spelling errors and an issue with werewolves. If there is any problem with the pdf, let me know so I can fix it.

How long do the small skirmish games last?

Small skirmishes tend to last about an hour. That's at about 500-800 Influence (points). We have had games where players unexpectedly stabbed each other in the back and they ended in about 20 minutes (and in disaster for most of the player's warbands).

How about the number of figures? Being skirmish, I'd think the number of figures might be low?
Would this work with smaller scale figures, a bit of scaling down might be needed?
My gaming group is sometimes reluctant to start anew - so would this work solo?

In small games, anything between 10-20 is normal, depending on what everyone is using. Larger scale games need more minis. Using 20mm and 1/72 scale works for Axe Age, but once you get to scales where multi-basing might be necessary, we never tried it. The game was also designed with at least two players in mind, but I suppose it could be used solo.

How do I change the facing of formations? I've been using the change formation action/just pivoting them but I feel like I missed something.

Under 'Change Formation' Action, it notes that movement within a unit counts as a 'Move' Action. Thus, if you are pivoting or wheeling a formation, you are measuring how far the model furthest out from the center is being moved, and that's how far the formation as a whole can pivot/wheel/etc. Most warriors are Move 4" and have 2 Actions, so theformation's outer-most warrior can be moved up to 8" to accomplish the pivot.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
