Star Fleet Battles: Basic Set Rulebook 2012

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Do you have what it takes to command a starship? Find out now!

The Basic Set is the entry point into the Star Fleet Battles game system. With this rulebook, you can command a starship! What you have seen, you can do for yourself. This introduction to the game includes rules for the Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Kzinti, Gorn, Tholian, and Orion ships.

The Basic Set Rulebook was last edited in 2012. It contains rules, the backgrounds of seven empires, descriptions of their ships, and lots of scenarios. There are nine general scenarios (so generic that they happened many times), five historical scenarios (ones that tell about a real incident in the Star Fleet Universe), four monster scenarios (these are for the planet crusher, space amoeba, moray eel of space, and cosmic cloud), two mini-campaigns, and one full campaign.

You will need the Basic Set SSD Book (sold separately in B&W and in color) in order to play the game. This is only the rulebook, not the complete game. There are no counters or maps.

I'm from Ger. I have no chance to buy a physical copy here - only WarGameVault is possible... Import from US is much too expensive!

What do I exactly need to play the game?

- Basic Set Rulebook (check!)
- Basic Set SSD (check!)
- Map? (Are the hexes numbered? Are there planets, nebulas, black holes etc. on it? Size in hexes? [e.g. 40x30] Hex-size? [e.g. 2"]) I found nothing here on WGV from ADB. So I have to do my own. Are there maps from other companies to use?
- Counters? (Where did I get them? Here from ADB? Alternatives?)
- Dice? (No probs to get - but which one? d6, d10?)
- What else?

I would be happy if I got an answer from you experts!

Hi Chris,

The maps can be found here: https://www.wargamevault.com/product/239526/

You will need a d6.

Counters are only available direct from ADB. However, we can usually ship them for much less than the shopping cart charges and refund the difference.

If you want to play with miniatures, the most cost-effective way is probably to order from ADB's shop on Shapeways.

Welcome to the game!

Thank you for the quick response!

I'm not an english speaking native: I meant if all of your pdfs (here at wargamevault) are printable?
Will all of your titles/books be available here some day? (R1 and J2 are not so far...)

Okay, so this and the Basic Set SSD book what we need to play a full game? The one that's called Complete Rules is more of a reference? It's a bit daunting to get into your game. Like everything in your "Current Edition" product category works with this edition of the game? And none of the old stuff in the other categories is applicable?

That is correct. You'll need something to represent the ships and dice, too. The complete rules are just that -- all the rules, none of the scenarios or ships. The Master Starship Book line describes the ships, but doesn't include SSDs. Basically, you need the rulebooks and SSD books to play the game.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
