A Sergeant's War: Rules for Wargaming Small Unit Combat in WWII

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Your platoon has clawed its way forward under heavy fire---but can they make it the last few yards and kick the enemy off the hill?

Find out with a Sergeant’s War, a WWII minatures game which emphasizes morale, unit quality, and small-unit leaders.  A typical force is a platoon of infantry backed up with heavy weapons and armor.  Units of maneuver are individual vehicles, squads and half-squads of infantry, and heavy weapon teams. A free introductory version of the game is also available for download.

Major features of the game include:

Fast play—2 hours or less

Easy combat mechanics—infantry fire, anti-tank fire, and close-range firefights all use the same basic to-hit mechanic

Importance of leaders—your squad and platoon leaders are critical to keep your force fighting, but every time they do something significant, they might get hit by enemy fire

Solo-friendly

Emphasis on units over individuals—players focus on the placement of squads, tanks, and heavy weapons, not individual riflemen

Can be played with any scale of miniatures and any type of basing

This book contains:

Rules for infantry and vehicle combat

Artillery and air support

Special terrain rules for bocage, urban combat, fighting in forests, and more

Special combat rules for human wave assaults, night fighting, chaos and confusion, and more

Tips for designing scenarios

7 scenarios

Orders of battle the US, German, Soviet, British, Italian, Japanese, and French armies

Vehicle and gun stats for 1940-1945

Markers for pinned, broken, and other game conditions

Supplements and scenario packs:

Kakazu Ridge--US Army vs. Japanese on Okinawa

I read through the "Introduction Version" of your game and it seems very interesting and fun to play. In your opinion, should be possible to convert it to play with boardgames having ruleset more complex? If yes, any suggestion ( " in hexes and so on)?. Thanks!

Hi

I don't see nowhere if it is an IGOUGO sequence of play or played by impulses or reactions.?

Cheers

Toupy,

Sorry for the extremely late reply.

It is an IGO-UGO game. Side A completes all of its actions and then Side B gets to go. However, the opposing side gets to use "defensive fire" throughout your turn, interupting your movement/attacks, and both sides' leaders may act to keep their forces fighting throughout the turn.

A new AAR, with a full description of mechanics. Basically a play-by-play of a whole game, using one of the scenarios available in the book.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
