Naval Warfare : Age of Missiles

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Naval Warfare : Age of Missiles.

A game of modern naval warfare. The set includes all you need to play including an illustrated rulebook, Counter sheets of ships, missiles, aircraft, Helicopters, and record counters and data cards. In addition there is a Spreadsheet to aid the design of your own ships.

The game can be played with models or using the counters provided.

The rules cover : Detection, missile, gunnery, torpedoes, and defensive fire, Electronic warfare, helicopters, and airstrikes using a simple d6 system, with symbols for each weapon system.

A single A4 full colour starter sheet of counters provides all that you need to get you started.  Other counter sheets provide a range of NATO and Soviet vessels from the 1980s-90s, and all of the record counters needed to play.

Please take a look at the preview which gives a good idea of the rules format and illustration style for the rulebook and counters.

When designing my own ships, how do I decide if a real ship has 1, 2, or 3 core boxes? What are the displacement breakpoints?

Its rsther abstract im afraid. The core boxes accommodate size structural rubustness ( recent vs older) This was based on a 1970s game system. Missile systems represent more than one installation.

I have been reading over the rules and I like what I see. Big question: How many missiles the short- and long- range missile systems represent? In other words, if I launch a missile am I really launching one missile or all the missiles at the same time. Depending on what sort of ship has the missiles, there can be from 2 to four missiles per system. For example, The Soviet Osa FAC will have a total of 4 missile on it, whereas a larger frigate will have eight.

Sorry long delay - missed this query. The answer is that it is abstracted and made more 'gamey' to reflect weapon system efficiency, but I have pitched at roughly 1 game missile = 2 real ones, though that is not always applied.

Sorry. I got no notification of this question and just noticed when snswering another. The represent pair or triples. Its a bit abstract rather than being a simulation. We found rbat making it 'gamey' keeps the feel of firing, defensive fire panic, and the excitemetnt of getting a missile through......

Any chance we might see the fonts and ship design stuff in a different format? Perhaps Word....

I love the rules. I have been tweaking them here and there for taste, but they work well enough.

Sorry, I do my drawing and therefore the counters and cards in Open Office because the drawing package is so much better than Word and it is free so anyone can download a copy and use the software. It would be a lot of work to convert everything or re do it in Word and the Open Office drawing package is quite intuitive and easy to pick up. I will not be able to do this.

I have released the Excel QRS and the Tables from the end of the rules plus some blank cards as two new and separate files. This should go some way to meeting this request (I had a couple of similar requests).

I bought these rules, and the supplement. I'm impressed by the writer's ability to write a rule-set that represents a lot of the elements of Modern Naval combat in a straight-forward way. This has produced some good games, played in a reasonable length of time. There are more complex rules/ simulations out there, by these are good rules, at a very competitive price too. The ship's data cards are easy for beginners to understand, and I found the players grasped the rules quickly.

A fantastic set of rules for modern warfare. I love the rules, but my biggest complaint is the lack of statistics for most US ships and no carriers. There is a designer that let's you build your own ships, but I would have preferred all of the major warships to already be included in the base game.

Firstly, apologies for the long gap before replying. I must have missed the email telling me about the review. I appreciate the point about the lists. Now that the sales have begun to move a bit I will consider making up the cards for more USA And USSR ships.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
