NG-1: US Army Pistols, Rifles, Carbines, Submachine Guns, and Machine Guns

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Have an army list or other resource with a weapon you've never heard of?  Did they make it up or did it actually exist?

Are you looking for new inspiration for a wargame campaign or roleplaying scenario?  Maybe a weapon or system you never knew existed?

Ever wondered why the M16 rifle is designated the M16 rifle?  Are there or were there fifteen other rifles before it?

These Nomenclature Guides can readily help provide the relevant information and might even answer some of those question.  Each guide includes an introduction to the guides, an introduction to the nomenclature system to help in reading the guide, and a detailed list of relevant nomenclatures.  In late 2004 and early 2005 I began collecting and compiling military nomenclature for my own personal use. As a wargamer and military history enthusiast I had found it easy to get lost in the slew of terms and alpha-numeric designations. Military nomenclature quickly became a hobby in of itself for me. What is presented in these guides is the product of years of continued searching for information and refinement in the presentation. The guides, however, are incomplete. A constant work in progress, in part because new systems are always coming into service, they also no doubt contain errors. Disputed and conflicting information is noted as such. A complete list of references would be massive, but the information is largely taken from official government documents.

Nomenclature Guide - 1 (NG-1) covers US Army pistols, rifles, carbines, submachine guns, and machine guns introduced from the 1930s onward.  It does not include "T" nomenclature used during this period and does not include nomenclature for systems already in service.  Known commercial nomenclature is also not included.

Buy Me Once: This guide is identical in content to the other listing for NG-1.  The increased price means that purchasers of this version will recieve any and all future updates to NG-1 for free, as long as Wargamevault.com continues to provide the option to do so.  These updates will not, however, be regular.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
